National Foundation Day or 개천절 celebrates the formation of the state of Gojoseon or ancient Korea and was established by Dangun Wanggeom in the year 2333 BC.
Dangun Wanggeom or 단군왕검 is said to be the “grandson of heaven” and over 4000 years ago followed in his father’s footsteps and descended from heaven onto Baekdu Mountain which is in reality is a dormant volcano in North Korea, and also the highest point in either North or South Korea. At this time he formed the city of Sinsi or City of God and Korea was born.
Originally this holiday was celebrated on according to the lunar calendar however these days it is tied to the solar calendar. Please have an enjoyable holiday and wish Korea a happy 4344th Birthday (2011).
