This 3 day weekend (May 26th-May 29th) in South Korea, is a time for celebration and wishing a happy birthday to Buddha. In Korea Buddha’s Birthday is celebrated on the on the 8th day of 4th lunar month, this year that day is Monday May 29th. On Monday “the day of Buddha’s birth”, many temples provide free meals and tea to all visitors.

Of the 48Million people living in Korea 23% are Buddhist, which comes a close second to Christians who account for 26% of the population, therefore this is a very important day for much of the population. Generally on Buddha’s Birthday schools, university’s and other public institutions are closed ago with most businesses, stores and shops are often open but for limited hours.
