It is a follow up to my recent article about the Seoul World Cup Stadium (Click Here For More), the game that we went to watch featured the giant of the K-League FC Seoul and a relative minnow in Incheon United in what is known as the Gyeongin Derby.
FC Seoul have a short yet successful history, originally founded 29 years ago as Lucky Goldstar FC they moved to Anyang in 1990 before returning to Seoul in 2004. FC Seoul have won 4 League titles, 2 League Cups and 1 FA Cup.
Incheon United in contrast have been running for only 8 years and have never won any silverware but did finish runners up in 2005.
There were a number of different activities outside the stadium mainly aimed at kids but there were also photo opportunity’s and former players signing kit. Inside the stadium there was a well stocked snack and drinks bar. Whilst on the pitch there were a number of different things going on; mascots dancing, some K-POP style cheerleaders (Pictured below) as well as a dance group called Clon (클론). Personally I have never heard of 클론 but since I’ve found out that they were popular in the 90’s but after a motorcycle accident 2 members where forced to use wheelchairs. Here is a video of them in action:
This K-League game didn’t come at a good time for Incheon who had only gained 1 point away from home all season, losing the other 6 games. Whilst FC Seoul had won 5, drawn 1 and lost o. The game started as expected with FC Seoul applying the pressure from the start and after a number of close changes winger Molina fired the ball into the top corner from the edge of the box to give FC Seoul a 1-0 lead after 26mins. The lead was doubled 11 minutes later with a goal from Damjanović. This happened to be his 100th goal for FC Seoul and he took it in style. Check it out:
After half-time Incheon seemed to wake up and find there feet, and after 20mins of semi-pressure Hyuk Jung found some space at the far post and made the game 2-1. Then came the main talking point the penalty that for some unknown reason was not given, only the man in black thought it was a fair tackle and after sending a Incheon coach to the stands for pointing this fact out, the game continued but it was now FC Seoul who liked the stronger and with Incheon tiring Dejan Damjanović found himself one-on-one with the Incheon keeper and coolly finished to make it 3-1.
The quality of the football played today was higher than normal and although it think it was a fair result, I feel Incheon will improve as the season goes on and won’t be bottom of the league for much longer.
Here is a video of all of the goals:
