The K League Classic continues with a midweek round of games (the 17th round of the 2016 season). The key game this Wednesday is the top half and North West derby clash between FC Seoul and Seongnam FC. Neither side are finding form at the moment and so this maybe closer than many would expect.
K League Classic 2016 League Table Update
As we move into the hot summer months the league title has taken shape. Jeonbuk have a two point lead at the top over FC Seoul, Ulsan Hyundai and Jeju United in 2nd through 4th.
At the other end of the table, Suwon FC are now bottom, but only a single point behind Incheon United and Jeonnam Dragons. With Suwon Bluewings a little above them.
K League Classic 2016 Round 17 Previews & Predictions
This round of games all take place on Wednesday. All of the games take place in the early evening. Here are our brief previews and predictions for the 17th round of 2016 K League Classic games;
Wednesday June 29th 2016:
Jeonbuk Hyundai vs. Jeonnam Dragons (7pm)
League leaders Jeonbuk Hyundai host the early game on Wednesday evening against struggling Jeonnam Dragons. Jeonbuk are unbeaten in the league so far this season and looking for a 3rd straight championship. Jeonnam Dragons have 2 wins from their last 5 games and sit 3rd from bottom. Jeonbuk beat Jeonnam earlier this season, and we think that will happen again.
*Fun Fact: Jeonnam haven’t won away at Jeonbuk since 2011*
Prediction: 2 – 0
Pohang Steelers vs. Ulsan Hyundai (7.30pm)
7th placed Pohang Steelers host this South East derby game against 3rd placed Ulsan Hyundai. Pohang have won their last two home games against Seoul and Seongnam. Ulsan have won 5 of their last 6 games in the league. The last 3 meetings between these sides have ended in a draw, and sadly we feel that’s the most likely outcome in this one.
Prediction: 1 – 1
Suwon Bluewings vs. Gwangju (7.30pm)
Suwon Bluewings have had a season to forget so far and are sitting down in 9th place, Gwangju are one place above them in 8th. Both Suwon and Gwangju haven’t won in 5 games now, so this game is important moving forward. In 9 previous encounters Gwangju have only won once. And we don’t see them winning a 2nd, and Suwon should edge it.
Prediction: 2 – 1
FC Seoul vs. Seongnam FC (7.30pm)
FC Seoul lost at the weekend, their first defeat in 5 games in both league and cup. They’re in 2nd place, whilst Seongnam are down in 6th without a league win in 5 games. Seoul won the reverse fixture 3-2 back in May. Strangely they haven’t beaten Seongnam at home in over 2 years. We see Seoul have the edge here, but it’s a derby of sorts and will be closer than a normal game.
Prediction: 3 – 1
Incheon United vs. Sangju Sangmu (7.30pm)
Incheon United have recently moved off the bottom of the table with 2 wins, 2 draws and 1 defeat from their last 5 games. Sangju Sangmu are the in-form side with 3 wins on the bounce scoring 10 goals in those games. These sides played earlier this season with Sangju coming from behind to win 4-2. Sangju will be favorites to win but it will be close.
*Fun Fact: Sangju haven’t won in Incheon since 2012*
Prediction: 1 – 2
Jeju United vs. Suwon FC (8pm)
Jeju United have had a good season so far and are sitting up in 4th place and have a good change of a Champions League Place come November. Suwon FC on the other hand are bottom of the league, 8 defeats in their last 9 games and they haven’t scored in 5 straight. Jeju won the reverse fixture 5-2 back in early May. This will be Jeju’s to lose.
Prediction: 2 – 0
