The Korean Rice Wine or Makkoli (also spelt Makgeolli) Market is a wide ranging and interesting one. With 750ml bottles costing as little as ₩900 (under $1) to premium bottles costing ₩5,000, ₩10,000 and higher.
Recently we tried a cheaper brand called Farmers Dream Makkoli (농부의꿈 막걸리). Here are our brief thoughts;
Firstly it’s cheap at around ₩1000 from Lotte Mart, it certainly won’t break the bank. Secondly the taste is smooth and there isn’t a strong aftertaste you sometimes get with Makkoli. Finally it’s local produced in Gwangju, Gyeonggi-do and so supports local businesses.
Overall it isn’t the best Makkoli in the world, but compared to similarly priced options it’s a leader. If you like Makkoli (Rice Wine) this is one to check out on a warm summers eve.
