Incheon United vs. FC Seoul (Gyeongin Derby 2016 / Sunday July 17th)
Incheon United: They are currently 10th in the league, an improvement from earlier in the season. They looked poor in the Cup during the week losing 4-1 on the road to Ulsan Hyundai. In the league they’ve been stronger winning 4 and drawing 3 of their last 8 games. Their star player is center-back Matej Jonjić, he is a class above the rest of the Incheon defence. At home they’ve only conceded 8 goals in 10 games this season.
FC Seoul: FA Cup winners last season and currently 2nd in the league. They narrowly overcame Jeonnam Dragons in the FA Cup during the week requiring penalties after a 0-0 draw. In the league they haven’t won in 5 games, but were playing against other sides in the top half of the table. Their Key player will be former Incheon man Dejan Damjanović, only 6 goals this season, but he is Seoul’s record goalscorer.
Head-to-Head: They played each other back in April with the game with Seoul winning 3-1.
Last season Seoul won 3 times (including the FA Cup Final) and the other ended 1-1. Incheon last beat Seoul 2 years ago.
Since 2004 they’ve played 39 times. With the record standing in Seoul’s favor, Seoul (20) draws (12) and Incheon (7). However 6 of those have been at home (4 Munhak and 2 Sungui).
Prediction: Incheon United 1 – 2 FC Seoul
FC Seoul aren’t second for a reason and have an impressive squad. Although they’ve been inconsistent recently they are a side that seem to be able to find that lucky edge in the big games. Incheon United won’t go down without a fight, and might finish the game with 10 men. We see Seoul winning but only just.
