To start with if you don’t know Pokemon Go is a Phone App / Game where you walk around in the real world and catch Pokemon, whilst also using augmented reality. It was released in the US and select other nations earlier in the summer, and has quickly become one of the most downloaded and used apps in world. Unfortunately due to mapping rules in South Korea it isn’t available here yet (apart from in Sokcho & Ulsan – details below) and players are only able to see empty fields of green and no Pokemon.
Sadly there has been another delay to the launch in South Korean Government delays their decision on Google’s request for mapping data until November 23rd (reuters). The reason for the delay has been a little vague but it seems to be regarding national security and possible related issues. The lack of Google Maps data means that Pokemon Go has once again been delayed, unless Niantic partners with a Korean Company such as Naver or Daum.
If the game is delayed until November, sadly the craze might be passed and the rest of the world moved on. The only upside is that the bugs should have been worked out and the game should work without crashing.
Google Maps in currently lacking in South Korea with an old 3rd party streetview map (only Seoul & Busan), neighboring Japan is full countrywide. The main map is often out of date, but is improving.
