We really enjoy Korean Rice Wine or Makkoli, and fortunately there are numerous different options. Recently we came across a Red Ginseng Makkoli (Makgeolli / Rice Wine) or 장홍삼장수막걸리, which looked like an interesting combination of two Korean favorites. Here are our thoughts;

Firstly the taste is smooth with a nice but not overpowering hint of Ginseng. It’s a little better than the plain Seoul Makgeolli, but of course it’s a little more expensive. Secondly on the subject of price it’s very reasonable at around ₩1500 ($1.50 or £1), as mentioned it’s a little more than the basic Makkoli brands but a little cheaper than the other flavored or mid-range options. Finally is it the best of both world? Not really it’s a nice Makkoli but the Ginseng content is low and therefore any focused Red Ginseng product would be better health wise.

Overall it’s wise while trying and enjoying, it makes a great little drink maybe when hiking during these late summer early autumn months.
