Hello and welcome to this weeks Modern Seoul KPOP Song of the Week, our Second for October 2016.
There have been a few interesting new KPOP releases over the past few weeks, however we’ve chosen the solo release from popular EXO member Lay (also known as Zhang Yixing) with a song titled “What U Need?“. and it was released on YouTube on Wednesday September 26th, in that time it’s been viewed over 2 million times on the SMTOWN YouTube Channel. Here are our reasons for choosing “What U Need?” for our KPOP song of the week:
- Firstly the song is fun and flows along nicely. The vocals are strong and there’s a nice blend of Chinese and English.
- Secondly the video is simple and focuses more on the song and dancing than a storyline or a big budget.
- Finally Lay has been active for over 10 years, mainly in his native China and has been apart of EXO since 2011. He is one of the most popular members with a huge following worldwide.
- On the negative side; it’s in Chinese, so it’s boarderline if it’s KPOP or not.

Ah, so Lay is Chinese and the song is in Chinese. Since it’s from SM, people who listen to the song will be K-pop fans. iTunes categorize it as Mandopop.
